Cambodia HARVEST 1. Food Security and Agriculture Initiatives 2. NRM/Community Forestry
HARVEST is comprised of two components:
1. Food Security and Agriculture Initiatives
- Home Gardens (100-200m2): Families are educated and provided with technical support to organize their own home gardens. This provides them with a source of both food and income.
- School Gardens and Commercial Gardens (500m2): Schools and those with larger plots of land are provided technical support and training. Also, they are encouraged to sell their homegrown products, to increase their income and have a more sustainable way to grow food.
- Rice: Provide further education on how to grow rice in a more sustainable and productive manner.
- Nutrition: Provide communities with information about nutrition to make better lifestyle choices and to improve their overall health. Nutritional advice is provided during for example cooking demonstrations. During these demo's, participants receive information on how to prepare the homegrown vegetables, meat, and fish in a safer way.
2. Natural Resource Management and the Community Forestry Project
This component is multifaceted, including a range of initiatives aiming to improve the management and maintenance of Cambodia's natural resources:
- Non-Timber Forest Product Processing: Providing training to timber processing groups about the use of rattan, bamboo, and other materials. This project will help the participants to sell their products on the marktet.
- Silviculture: Involves trimming and maintaining trees to slow their growth for the surrounding trees and vegetation
- Forestry Committee Legislation: Registering Community Forestry Committees with the Forestry Administration Containment. This will give the committees official recognition, and lends them the power to legally protect and maintain the forest and to halt illegal logging.
- Agroforestry: Creating agricultural opportunities within the forestry community. For example plant pineapple or pumpkin, because these thrive in shadow-rich environments. The project also involves providing technical support and education, to help those communities to grow and sell their products.
- Woodlot: Planting and replanting trees to continue the regeneration in the forest
- Tree Nursery: Nurseries are setup to generate a wide variety of trees in the forest. These include fruit trees which will be utilized as a source of income for the forestry community.
The HARVEST project ended mid-2016.
