ECHO & AVSF Emergency Response and Rehabilitation
In September and October 2011, Siem Reap suffered from severe flooding, devastating the poor rural population. They were left with flooded houses, increased risk of illnesses and infections due to waterborne diseases. Rice crops and vegetable gardens were washed away, which significantly impacted, if not completely eradicated some families source of income.
Initially supported by Concern Worldwide alongside ECHO, HURREDO provided two times emergency assistance to the Banteay Srei and Svay Leu district.
The initiatives:
Provision of Conditional Grants: The flood victims in the targeted areas received cash to recover and restore their income and work, whether it is a home garden or a small business. Those who accept the grant must agree to the conditions set by HURREDO to ensure that the money is used appropriately
- Rice Bank: The Rice Bank stores the villages rice stocks. Due to the flood, the rice stocks have been unable to meet the demand, due to the increased number of people who need access. HURREDO provides extra rice to the rice bank to continue the rice provision to those who need it
- Cash For Work: This program provides cash to those who work towards the rehabilitation of small infrastructure within the target districts
- Access: Improving the people's access to clean water by providing water filters and SODIS materials which assist the eradication of bacteria within the water to make it safe. HURREDO also provides waste disposal methods and latrines to affected districts
